Ambassador Family,  The Perkins

College sweethearts, Breeana and Kevin Perkins, married in 2009 and began planning their life together including starting a family.  In preparation, Breeana stopped her birth control so her body could adjust, but after months of absent cycles it became apparent there was an issue.   After seeing her doctor and some testing, Breeana discovered she was 1 out of 1000 women who have Premature Ovarian Failure also known as Primary Ovarian Insufficiency.

Breeana knew what this diagnosis meant; she would not be able to carry a child of her own.  As supportive as her care team was, it was still extremely hard to come to terms with. Breeana and Kevin took some time to let the news sink in and went through all the stages of grief together, mostly denial and sadness.  She began hormone replacement therapy and started to navigate her new normal.

Throughout the next 6 years, Breeana and Kevin had to talk out their plans and determine their path. They knew if they wanted a family, they would need to make a decision, their only options being IVF with a donor egg or adoption.  It was hard to commit though knowing both paths could lead to another heartbreak.   In late October of 2016, the couple received a call that made up their minds for them.  A family member knew of a woman about to have a baby, who was desperately seeking an adoption placement for the child.   That was it; adoption was the path to pursue.

While the plan started to take shape, unfortunately the path to adopting the child encountered some unexpected challenges and at their lawyer’s counsel they had to walk away.   That same lawyer had an alternative option though with another mother.  They started the adoption process over by meeting the birth Mom and attending doctor’s appointments. Although there were still several emotional hurdles, this adoption worked!  Baby Brecken was born in May of 2017 and Breeana and Kevin were right there to welcome their miracle baby.  All their sorrow immediately turned to love, joy, and pure light!

Over the next several hours they knew they still had an upward battle because it was known the baby would have potential complications. The NICU team calmed the nervous parents and while caring for Brecken also taught them the skills they would need.  After 2 weeks in the NICU, they finally were able to go home to be a family.  Today Brecken is a smart, funny, energetic, perfectly healthy and happy 2-year-old!

March of Dimes is leading the fight for healthy moms and strong babies.  From funding research to find the causes of issues like ovarian failure to supporting policy initiatives aimed at helping moms and babies receive top quality care.  We invite you to join us to support the health of moms and babies everywhere.

LOCAL INVESTMENT AND IMPACT

Together we can give them tomorrow

Premature birth is the most serious infant health problem in the United States today. It is, in fact, the #1 killer of babies. It affects more than half a million babies nationwide each year, with over 15,000 in Michigan alone. The U.S. preterm birth rate is still too high at 11.4 percent—higher than that of most developed nations—while Michigan’s preterm birth rate is even higher at 11.9 percent.

Premature birth costs society more than $26 billion a year. Babies born just a few weeks early are at risk of severe health problems and lifelong disabilities, taking an extreme toll on families emotionally and financially.

How we are making an Impact:

March of Dimes Michigan has heavily invested in group prenatal care with our partners across the state.  This innovative approach to prenatal care has produced significant improvement in not only babies being born at term, but also Mom and baby thrive in bonding, increased breastfeeding, and healthy weight gain and brain development.

March of Dimes is strategically fund programs that promote health equity among different racial/ethnic groups.  African American babies are two times more likely to be born premature more than their Caucasian counterparts.  Michigan funds programs that address social determinates of health to increase the rate of African American babies born full term.

Leading preventable causes of premature birth in Michigan include; tobacco use during pregnancy, lack of health education and good health status prior to pregnancy as well as lack of access to proven interventions for women with prior preterm birth such as progesterone (17P) shots.

  Michigan Investment Goals:
1. Increase access to pre- and interconception (in-between births) education for high-risk women
2. Decrease late preterm birth by reducing early elective deliveries before 39 weeks
3. Reduce racial/ethnic disparities in premature birth outcomes

In 2018, the March of Dimes granted $1.1 million for programs, research and services in Michigan. The funds provide prenatal education for doctors and nurses at community hospitals.

In an Average Week in Michigan:
2,182 babies are born
151 babies are born to teen mothers (ages 15-19)
711 babies are delivered by cesarean section
254 babies are born preterm
179 babies are born low birthweight
16 babies die before their first birthday
