2019 Ambassador
The March of Dimes mission revolves around our families. We love to share their powerful stories. The Mitchell family is no exception. William and Victoria Mitchell began their NICU journey when their daughter, Sage, was born at 22 weeks gestation. She weighed only 500 grams - about 1 lb and 1.5 ounces. Sage spent the first month of her life at Sentara Virginia Beach General before she was transported to CHKD after it was determined that she had a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) and required surgery. Sage also underwent surgery on her eyes as result of developing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). After a three month stay, Sage was discharged from CHKD’s step down unit weighing a little over 4lbs. Sage has only been hospitalized 1 time since she was released but Sage is still followed by a specialist for her eyes. She had a total of seven surgeries, 5 of which were related to her eyes and 2 for the PDA.
Today, Sage is a healthy, happy teenager who loves children, playing tennis and music. She is a rising 11th grader at Kellam High School where she plays on the girls tennis team. Upon graduating from High School, Sage plans to attend college in Atlanta where she will study medicine with the ultimate goal of becoming a neonatologist to help save premature babies just like her.
The Mitchell family has been a dedicated supporter and advocate of the March of Dimes for sixteen years. They have been a part of our March for Babies event since 2003 – when Sage was still in the NICU. They appreciate all the support the organization has given them and are a strong reminder why the March of Dimes leads the fight for all moms and babies.
EVENT LEADERSHIP
This year we are thrilled to have Julia Rust as our Event Chair. Julia is a partner at Pierce McCoy, a boutique corporate law firm located in downtown Norfolk. She focuses her practice on corporate litigation and business disputes. Julia is passionate about women's issues and after supporting March of Dimes for several years with her husband Steve through the Signature Chefs Auction, she was eager to become more actively involved with the organization. The Signature Chefs Auction is not just an exciting culinary event, but an opportunity to see the impact that March of Dimes' research, advocacy, and resources has had on mothers, infants, and their families during such critical times. Supporting March of Dimes' mission will provide more happy endings for these families.
